The Polygraph
• Detection of Deception has a history spanning thousands of years. One of the first methods for Detection of Deception was to let the suspected culprits lick a hot piece of iron. The person that burnt his tongue was considered the guilty one. From this method we learned that when a person is lying his mouth is likely to get very dry. But we can’t go around having people lick a hot piece of iron in the modern times that we live in… Hence the Polygraph machine was designed and has reached new heights in technology. We have come from old school analog machines to computerized machines today. The Polygraph has also been scientifically tested and validated by scientists the USA.
Why Polygraph?
• The Polygraph Test and Techniques was designed to help as an Investigative tool in the fight against crime, which it still does to this day.
• But the modern-day Polygraph Examiner is trained to also use the Polygraph Test as a preventative instrument, for companies seeking to employ the best candidate by conducting Pre-Employment and Periodical Tests.
Incident Specific Test
• Incident Specific Test is used in the unfortunate circumstance when a crime or loss has occurred at the company.
• The test would indicate who might be involved or have knowledge of the crime and rule out those not involved.
• This test is the most used test in Polygraph industry in South Africa.
Pre-Employment Test
• In the Pre-employment Tests the Examiner can ask the questions that the candidate would probably not answer honestly during an interview. The Employer could state what is the criteria that he wants from the candidate I.E., has the candidate ever stolen any property from a previous employer, has the candidate ever assisted in the theft of company property and does the candidate use illegal drugs. Questions which a candidate would most probably not answer honestly in an interview.
Periodical Polygraph Test (Integrity Screening Test)
• The Periodical Test is utilized to keep current employees honest and build a bond of trust between employer end employees. The Periodical Test is conducted randomly on all current employees once or twice a year, depending on the position of the employee. If an employee has access to large amounts of money or stock, it is advised that the tests be done twice a year. By conducting Periodical Tests, it relieves stress from the Employer of fearing a loss by theft of an employee. Many companies have lost millions because of an employee that stole stock or embezzled funds from the company. With the Periodical Test this problem could be detected early on, and a big loss could be avoided.
